On the morning of May 14, the seminar "Gender Equality Begins with Dolls" was held online, and China's first "100 Gender Equality Children's Books" book list was officially released. Li Wen, chairman of Shenzhen Aiyue Public Welfare Foundation, and Zhang Mingzhou, chairman of the International Children's Book Alliance, delivered speeches on the significance of book list development. Experts at the meeting discussed the path of gender equality education from children's reading.
Professor Chen Ning of Nankai University talked about the modern gender awareness of publishers, Professor Wu Xiaowei of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Campus talked about gender issues in children's books, Zou Weiquan, secretary general of Green Bud Foundation, talked about gender education for children, and Huang Xiaoyan, founder of children's book brand Wonderland Li Shuo, an expert on gender equality and international development, exchanged views on the publication of gender equality awareness children's books, and on international cooperation in gender equality books.
Gender inequality is a pervasive problem across cultures and history. Gender equality does not refer to female liberation or feminism alone, but includes gender equality for men. Societal expectations, requirements, and constraints that develop differently for men and women simply because of biological differences between men and women can be called gender stereotypes.
Although the equality of men and women in my country has been greatly improved, there are still many areas that need to be improved. In real life, gender role education begins even before birth. From the color of the room, the color of the clothing, the choice of toys, the naming, etc., the solidification of gender roles is gradually being educated. At the same time, media such as textbooks, books, and television play an important role in the construction of individual gender awareness. Academia has a relatively consistent understanding that education, especially teaching materials and various children's books, is the key to building a society of equality between men and women.
In this context, it is particularly important to create and promote children's books with gender equality awareness. In the middle and late 20th century, many foreign picture books and novels showed a creative tendency against gender stereotypes, subverting the tradition from the perspectives of traditional family gender division of labor, personality and hobby orientation, and individual marriage choices.
Funded by Shenzhen Aiyue Public Welfare Foundation, the project team consists of four experts, Professor Chen Ning, Professor Wu Xiaowei, postdoctoral fellows Wang Shuai Nai and Xu Meiling. (2) Books that criticize gender stereotypes. There are two types of books in this category, one is a statement that has a clear anti-gender stereotype, and the other is a new version of the gender stereotype of the classic story. For example, in "The Paper Bag Princess", the princess who saved the prince through wisdom was portrayed. In "Big Banana Riding a Puppy", "It's not the little girl who is afraid of puppies, it's Lin Lin who is afraid, I'm not afraid" directly criticizes the problem of generalizing the characteristics of a certain girl. "When I Want to Cry" expresses the anti-traditional "man's tears don't flick".
(3) Works that enrich the diverse imaginations of gender roles, such as books about the mutual respect of the same sex or the opposite sex and embodying sisterhood, such as "I Am Your Sister" and "Millions of Tomorrows", in which sisters, mothers and daughters support each other with friendship.
(4) Although gender equality is not the only appeal, books that show the positive development of personal characteristics, such as "I Am Me", constantly remind readers to reflect on what is "normal" and what is "abnormal".
